Bio: Zachariah Rice was a millwright and skilled carpenter. About the age of 20 he boarded the vessel Edinburgh to seek a better way of life in the New World. It landed on September 16, 1751 in Philadelphia. Zach settled in Chester Co, PA where he designed and built a mill for clover seed.

It was in 1757 that he met and married Maria Appolonia Hartman a young girl of 15 years from Germany.

On their wedding day the newly weds were given 200 acres of farm land by her father Johannes, there

they would build their home and raise 21 children. Zachariah enlisted in the Army as an engineer under the command of General George Washington. He also helped in the construction of the Yellow Springs Hospital

near his home, where is wife Maria often aided the wounded soldiers, and it was also from here that she contracted typhus which would take her life.

It was after the loss of his wife, and the ending of the war that Zachariah loosing his land

moved his children to Juniata Co. that he purchased land once again and recieved his clear title for his property in 1801, which is known as Spring Mill, Pennsylvania.Seeing there was no German Lutheran place

to worship he built the first church, and a cemetery.

It is here that Zachariah was buried on August 19,1811 at the age of 80 years.

Bio: Maria Hartman born on Sept 4, 1742 Wurtemburg Germany married at the age of 15 yrs. and bore 21 children. For all her devotion to the War her name was put in a chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, DC . Maria is buried in St. Peter's Church Cemetery in Chester Co. Pennsylvania.
